Let’s be REALLY, REALLY clear on this…
The Nutrition Industry is FULL of B.S!
With SO MUCH information available at our fingertips, how do you sift through the B.S?
Daily, we’re introduced to a new concepts or dieting fads that promise that you’ll lose fat, build muscle and change your life! Each product is endorsed by someone that’s lost ‘X kilograms’ doing it, or another big name nutrition ‘expert’ promising you the change you’re looking for.
Over the coming couple of weeks, we’re going to BUST a few common NUTRITION MYTHS, and hopefully help you move that next step closer to your goals (and away from the B.S)!
Myth 1: “Eating carbs after dark will make you fat”
In theory, this kind-of makes sense. The myth came about when some ‘fitness experts’ made the claim that since you’ll be going to bed soon, your metabolism is going to slow down, and insulin sensitivity will decrease. When we experience these changes, the theory states that excess carbs in the body will more than likely be stored as fat, than used as energy. Sounds like it could be right. Right?
Firstly, when you sleep, your metabolism doesn’t just stop. Researchers have even show that during deeper sleeps your metabolism actually rises slightly. How does this compare to the rest of your day? Funnily enough, when making the comparison to your resting metabolic rate (what you burn just being you during the day) it’s actually been found to be pretty much the same.
Secondly, your ability to ‘handle’ carbohydrates in the evening has been shown to be on par with your mid-day meals. So to be clear, your body doesn’t become a carbohydrate gremlin in the PM, shuttling carbs straight to fat cells to haunt you another day.
Lastly, eating carbs in your evening meal will actually IMPROVE your sleep quality. Carbs release hormones into the blood stream that relax and prepare you for a restful night’s sleep. If you sleep better, you can recover better, train harder and get leaner.
So before you start dumping carbs from dinner, give it a second thought. It could be the difference maker you need!
