Have you ever wondered why so many popular weight loss programs are built around 1200 calories?
This magic number pops up all the time and it doesn’t seem to be going away, so we did a bit of research and came up with the following:
- NOTHING
What we do know to be true however is that there is a stack of good research available that supports a calorie deficit, i.e. taking in less energy than you expend as being the golden rule in weight loss.
In simple terms:
From this point on its get a little more complicated. You see the “calories out” part of this equation is highly individualized. The different factors that go into our “CALORIES OUT” are determined by our size, gender, work, lifestyle, behavior and exercise. Already you can see that no two people out there are the same. So it follows then how can everyone be given this one magic number?
Still staying along this science inspired path, the researchers have also been clever enough to come up with formulas that help people like us trainers come up with how much you SHOULD be eating to lose FAT at a safe rate so it stays off.
With all this factual, researched and proven information, if we were to apply it to a real individual then, who should be eating 1200 calorie? This may surprise you, but an average 50kg individual who exercises moderately 3/wk is the perfect 1200 calorie individual, IF THEY WANT TO MAINTAIN their weight, not lose. But even that number can become highly individual between 50kg people!
Not sure about you, but I can’t think of many overweight adults tipping the scale at 50kg!!!
