Food has been my biggest reason for success and failure when it comes to weight loss. There is a saying that you cannot out train a bad diet. It is an old saying for a reason, because it’s true.
Over the years I have trained ‘hard’ but never really controlled my food intake. I’d be training 5 – 7 days a week but I’d be eating McDonalds or KFC just as many days and drinking at least 2-4 litres of Coke every day.
I had already won the gene pool lottery with Cancer and Heart Disease impacting my parents, grandparents and other family members. When my weight ballooned up to 120kg I knew I had to do something about it if I didn’t want to follow in their footsteps.
I’d known PPT Director Sean O’Shea for about 10 years through mutual friends and our competing on local professional wrestling events together. Sean had always been into fitness for as long as I’d known him and was extremely educated. Also he was jacked so you could see that he practiced what he preached. Most other personal trainers I knew looked like me more than Sean. This didn’t really sell me on their effectiveness or make me want to give them my money.
When Sean gave up play fighting in his undies and opened PPT I gave him a call as I knew I had to train there. Sean invited me down to the gym and showed me around. Straight away you could feel this was a serious but fun place to train. All the trainers and trainees we friendly and wanted you to succeed.
I returned for my first session with Katie and learned just how much work was going to be required as 2kg had never been so heavy. Working with Katie twice a week I set up long and short-term goals. Katie helped me understand just how bad my diet was and what I could do to improve it.
Within 12 months I achieved my long term goal and lost 17kg following the plan that Katie put in place with me. Shortly after Katie left PPT and I met Alex and have trained with him since then.
Working with Alex I changed my goals from losing a massive amount of weight to maintaining my weight and changing up my body composition. Most important for me it became an accountability point for me. I knew working with Alex once a week if I went back to my bad habits I’d let myself down and have to discuss it with him. This approach has worked for me as I’ve been able to maintain my weight for 2 years as well as increase my bench press, back squat and deadlift personal bests.
In addition to personal training I also attend the PPT Squad sessions; Strong, HIIT and Total Squads are the ones I frequent. These sessions are great as you get to work with the other PPT trainers that I wouldn’t normally train with. You also get to know some of the other PPT clients when teaming with them to get through the workout.
I’ve also taken part in two 12 Weeks Shift programs, PPT’s original body composition program. My first experience was a mixed bag due to my ability to stick to my diet. I started strong for the first 6 weeks, fell off the wagon for 3 weeks and working closer with Alex pulled it back in for the last 3 weeks. My second experience was far more effective. I worked really had to change up my diet and get back to basics with my training focusing on weight loss. I was able to reduce my weight by 6kg’s without losing any muscle mass. Alex made himself available to answer my questions and really pushed me and challenged me to reach my target.
Finally there is the social and education opportunities that PPT offers. There are regular seminars on various topics, group training sessions mentioned above and they are always finding a reason for a party. Then there is SPARTAN, I never dreamed of running a 7km obstacle course. In May this year I plan to run the Spartan Beast which is 21km.
While I still have my challenges with food things are more controlled thanks to the lessons I’ve learned at PPT.
My PPT experience has been a great journey and I’d recommend anyone looking to make a change to try them out. They are not the cheapest in town but like anything you get what you pay for. The service you receive is worth more than you will pay any you wont regret it.
