The health, fitness and nutrition scene has now become a billion-dollar industry! There are so many good, smart people out there, trying to educate and improve the health of the population. Unfortunately, there plenty of QUACKS and CHARLATEANS as well!
Speaking of QUACKS, let’s BUST HOLES in one of the BIGGEST MYTHS of them all, DETOXES AND CLEANSES
Myth 2: INSERT ANY TYPE OF CLEANSE OR DETOX HERE
Now there is nothing wrong with drinking juices, eating plenty of vegetables or evening eliminating certain foods on occasion (they may be out of season or causing you digestive distress for example). But if the first point your chosen fat loss plan discusses, is all the foods you CAN’T EAT, you need to start questioning.
This is where DETOXES, CLEANSES and OTHER WHOLE FOOD ELIMINATION DIETS go wrong.
Juice cleans and diets, lemon detox diets, colon cleanses and liver cleanses. This list just keeps on growing. All of which presumably have the goal of ridding the body of harmful substances and ‘toxins’, purifying your body and cleansing you from head to toe! This generally involves cutting out some kind (or many) types of foods, extremely low calorie conditions, and the possible sale of a few special supplements as well (another warning sign).
Given the world we live in, it’s not a surprise that this kind of thing has become popular. Our food is sprayed with chemicals and pollution is at times viewable in the sky. It’s really an easy sell to the miss-lead, health conscious individual.
But can we really become toxic? Kind of…
If you were really to become toxic, unfortunately no lemon infused water, or magic supplement is going to help you. Acute toxicity if truly present could possibly kill you, and cost you a trip to the emergency room.
As modern day human, we are faced with pollutants and toxins daily. Lucky for us, a well fed human body has organs such as the liver, kidneys and lungs that work around the clock to remove these substances from our body. Your body may become exposed to some of these so called toxins, but rest assured there are natural mechanisms in place that aim to eliminate them over time. There are some cases (like heavy metal poising) can occur in humans, but even in these cases, you’re not going to be treated with a detox diet or product.
So what can you do?
Simply eat yourself a healthy, balanced diet comprised mainly of whole foods with minimal processing. The evidence in support of detox diets or products just isn’t there! Until the day that it is, save yourself and your wallet the hassle you and let your all-natural detoxification system to deal with the “toxins” on it’s own.
